Teaching Children to Communicate
Practical Language for Parents
Instead of correcting behaviour, try:
- “I see you’re having a big feeling.”
- “Your feelings make sense.”
- “What do you need right now?”
- “I’m here to help you find words.”
Real-Life Example:
A child throws their school bag across the playground after school. The adult responds: “School took a lot out of you today. Let’s sit together and figure out what you need before homework.”
Skill Building Takes Time
Remember: emotional regulation is a developmental process, not a skill children can instantly access.
Real-Life Example:
A child who previously melted down daily may slowly begin to pause and seek help. This progress is subtle and cumulative, built through repeated moments of co-regulation.
Co-regulation is the bodies ability to regulate to another human. To understand this further complete The Calm Parent Path.
